  • Art & Aesthetics - Lessing's Laocoon
  • October 21, 2022
  • 3:00-5:00 PM
  • This year, the working group in Art and Aesthetics, led by Nancy Yousef (English) and Liz Camp (Philosophy), will be exploring issues of translation and adaptation, both across languages and across media. For our first session, we'll read Lessing's Laocoon. Going forward, we may take up some of following themes: the idea of fidelity (and oral traditions as challenges to it); norms of precision and opportunities for creation; preserving, exploiting, and sacrificing fine-grained linguistic structures in translation; translating narrative structure; and/or aesthetic exercises involving cyclic and radically excerpted translations.
