Over the past 15 years, Istanbul’s Tarlabaşı neighborhood has been undergoing urban transformation. The Justice and Development Party government designated a portion of the neighborhood as an urban transformation zone, which led to property expropriation, evictions, demolitions, and the construction of a luxury business and residential complex. In this talk, I trace how remaining Tarlabaşı residents use the time construction takes to “figure it out:” they practice everyday care as a future-oriented politics of remaining. Following three residents, we will see that they put pasts and presents to work to shape a future in which they not only occupy space, but mold broader urban political processes.
