Art and Aesthetics Meeting and Discussion

From: Thursday, March 04, 2021, 04:30pm

To: Thursday, March 04, 2021,

The aim of the Arts and Aesthetics Working Group is to explore divergences and convergences around questions of artistic form, expression, and criticism.  We are especially interested in fostering discussion across our respective disciplines.

Our first meeting will be Thursday March 4th at 4:30, and we'll discuss Jonathan Kramnick's recent essay in Critical Inquiry, "Criticism and Truth."

In his abstract, Kramnick describes the essay as "making a case for the truth claims of literary criticism by examining the epistemology of close reading."  It’s our hope that the interest in methodology, expertise, and recourse to philosophical accounts of knowledge that are at issue in the essay should make for the beginnings of a lively interdisciplinary conversation.
