This project critically examines cross-border migratory flows to and from the Soviet Union, a space often dismissed or not immediately visible in migration scholarship, despite its worldwide influence. Why would anyone have moved to the USSR? How did the global geopolitical and economic conditions affect the selection process?

Irina Nicorici is a PhD candidate at the Department of Sociology at Rutgers. Her research draws on a range of materials and mixed research methods to help build a global understanding of mobility in the Cold War era.
