This working group brings together humanities and social sciences faculty and graduate students throughout the Rutgers campuses to explore the topic of “new cosmopolitanisms.” The study group explores such topics as: global cities, new and revised notions of community, local globalism, citizenship and migration, rethinking of East/West and North/South polarities, translation, language change in the new cosmopolis, and the cultural challenges of the “post-colonial.”

In 2009-2010, the group sponsored a major initiative focused on "the Americas," which was explored through public lectures and roundtable discussions organized around four keywords: RACE, MODERN, POPULAR, and AMERICA. Events scheduled throughout the year brought to campus scholars from throughout the Americas and Europe. Additionally, New Cosmopolitanisms co-sponsored with the Modernism and Globalization Seminar Series a half-day symposium on "Postcolonial Modernisms," on February 26, 2009.
